Painter and assemblage artist Scooter LaForge (at left) will be one of five mixed-media artists to be featured in the upcoming (June 2004) Galeria ARTopia show, "5 x 5 = 25." Scooter La Forge is best known for his ability to incorporate random objects into his paintings. His mixed media creations combine pop-culture icons in dramatic settings that often tell a story. Categorized as neo-popism or urban-outsider art, Scooter's work is always evolving. One show is entirely different than the next. He most recently showed his work in two New York City galleries, Wooster Projects and 12 Little West 12. The collection at left, titled Protection, combines Scooter's favorite New York City buildings with his signature birds, neatly tied together with "Kabbalah-esque" protective red string. "I wanted to capture NY and protect it," says Scooter. "These buildings hold a special place in my heart, especially the Chrysler building. Its beauty is indescribable. It and they have always symbolized NY for me. I have protected them in these pictures by having my birds wrap them in red string." Scooter currently resides on Manhattan's Lower East Side. His work, he says, is "on constant view" in galleries in San Francisco and San Antonio. At left are seven works from Scooter LaForge's series Protection that will be included in the upcoming Galeria ARTopia show, "5x5=25". Top row, left to right:
