In her own words, Kathleen Sparkes approaches art philosophically: "I have always loved the beauty and lyricism of marks on surface," she says, "and the sensual and intellectual pleasure of creating art. My art is informed by a love of the human form and an interest in human cosmologies. We all have beliefs and rituals, both mundane and sublime, and I believe all of these have unique beauty and humor. The best response to my art, for me, is when the viewer finds meaning I never intended, yet speaks somehow to my initial vision. That means I am connecting on a very universal level." "I love creating art that moves and speaks both in a narrative way," she continues, "and in a purely graphic sense. The physicality of making marks and moving color holds great pleasure, and I love to experiment in any media that allows exploration an expansion of these experiences. I alternate between print making, painting, and collage, and love finding new ways of combining techniques that hopefully engage the sensibilities of the viewer, and bring forward the narrative of the piece." Kathleen Sparkes has been an Artist and Graphic designer for 20 Years. Her design is informed and inspired by her artistic experiences and her art is an exploration of ideas discovered in her design. She is currently a Senior Book Designer at the University of New Mexico Press. |
